You might get asked about food hygiene and if you have the relevant certificate.

What experience do you have in similar roles?
What do you know about the company you have applied to work for?
Can you work flexible hours?

Good Luck!

When they ask if there is any questions you have do not ask them what the wages are or how many holidays you get, ask what are the training programmes like. Good luck.

For Work Experience I chose to work in a canteen at Colmans so I was assistant chef for 2 weeks and I enjoyed that but in a years time I will be hoping to become a proper chef yet I don't want to work in a hotel/army. I have taken GCSE subjects: English , Maths , Science , ICT & am doing a course at college in ABC Level 1 in Hospitality & Catering. Basically what I am saying is, What jobs in Hospitality & Catering can I get with my qualifications without having a tough time in a kitchen without working in a hotel or in the army ? Thanks in advance.

I work as a catering assistant in a primary school, mostly making the snacks. For £1.40 (due to go up to £1.60) the kids get a filled roll or sandwich, cake (on cake days 3 times a week) fruit or yoghurt and juice or a milk (plain or flavoured). They can also have a hot meal. Both sides numbers have plummeted since all the healthy eating came into force. The numbers used to be good when the kids got homebaking or crisps. The days would be alternated ie. mon, wed and fri it would be cakes, tues and thur would be crisps. They have now taken crisps of the menu and replaced them with veg bags, and the cakes are now as plain as you get (no icing or chocolate, even for decorating them!) I know there is a need to be more health conscious and am aware that for some kids, it's the only meal they will see, but the kids don't want this and the numbers are plummeting. Now our boss has come in and more or less threatened that jobs will go if they do not go back up, but our hands are tied as almost all our suggestions are not allowed! It's a nightmare. For the snacks we have tried to give a variety of wraps, fancy breads, rolls, sandwiches, finger rolls and baguettes. We have added different fillings like chicken mayo, tikka etc. I am trying to find suggestions from parents and kids to see what they would like their kids to be eating. We make oaties and put raisins in some buns but the kids avoid :( Also we aren't allowed peanut butter because of allergies, no choc chips etc. Memememe - what you have suggested sounds the same as what we do just now. The kids here just don't seem to take them. Ham sandwiches and butter rolls are what goes down well, but boss said today no more butter rolls in case anyone complains. She has a point but the kids ask for them. It's just everything we suggest, we get told a big fat "no". Really getting me down, especially as it's no fault of our own but we are gonna be the ones that pay :(

I am a chef in a children's nursery and I am cooking for between 130 to 150 children a day on my own with NO help. I am finding this a struggle and things are getting over looked. I do all my own washing up, big pots etc and don't have a kitchen porter or even someone just to peel spuds. It's far too much of a work load for one person I have asked my employer for a kitchen porter/kitchen hand because i am getting so tired but she is looking at me like i have two heads and telling me the job can be done on my own. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a law on how many people you can cook for alone before you have a kitchen assistant to help? Any help would be great, thank you I forgot to say this is a new job, been with the company one month, surrey,uk.
